Note that the price per plant is calculated on the total number of all species ordered. As stock sells out, sizes, species and provenances will become unavailable, so you are encouraged to order as soon as possible.
Beechgrove Trees and Hedging is not currently VAT registered, so no VAT needs to be is added to these prices.
Most trees will be 20-40cm in size. The majority of trees are grown in a 175ml cell using a peat-free growing medium, but some trees are grown in larger cells and some are bare rooted (only available mid-Nov onwards).
Numbers of all species are limited so you should order at the earliest possible opportunity as we usually sell out of most species by Christmas.
Where a species is no longer available, we will contact you to offer alternative species, but will only substitute species with your agreement.
Tree seed is collected locally where possible, but cropping differs between years, with some years, individual species simply fail to crop. To try and provide the full range of species, we buy in seed from across the UK, so if you require details of seed provenance, simply get in touch.
Purchased plants/tubes etc can be collected by arrangement. Deliveries within Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders can be arranged either using our own transport or couriers. All other deliveries will be by courier. All deliveries will be charged at a cost based on the size of the consignment and the weight.
Orders can be made in person, over the phone or by email. A delivery period will be agreed and full payment must be made prior to delivery. Because of high demand, if by 1st March, where trees/guards/stakes etc are not collected or a revised delivery period agreed with us, we reserve the right to re-sell such items.
We welcome opportunities to plan ahead, so if you are considering a planting project over a number of years, we can potentially include additional species in our range. Also if you have a larger project (over 10,000 trees) which you are looking to take forward in subsequent seasons, we are happy to discuss how we can help you.
Note – prices for stakes and guards may be subject to increase during the year due to factors outside our control.

Advantages of our Cell Grown Trees
There are many important benefits to using cell grown trees, as opposed to bare rooted trees:
Good for Management
- Less experienced growers, volunteers and children find cell grown trees more straightforward to plant
- Cell grown trees are easier to manage in the nursery
- We can then move the plants outside to harden off, to get ‘an element of weathering’
- Weathering promotes stronger growth and acclimatises the plants to the outside environment
Strong plants
- The plants get off to a good start as the special cells retain moisture and encourage a healthy root system
- This strong root system remains intact as the cells help prevent damage
- Strong roots means that your trees establish quickly in their new environment
- There is a better success rate with cell grown trees once they’re planted out
Unrestricted planting
- Cell grown trees can be planted in the nursery over a longer period of time and, crucially…
- Planted outside over a longer period of time, cell grown trees are not restricted to winter planting. You can plant all year round
- This also means a more flexible, convenient (and often more pleasant) planting experience!
- No need for cold storage
Environmental positives
- The cells themselves are durable and can be reused over many years
- Less need for ‘beating-up’ (replacing dead plants)
- We are making steps to using fully peat-free growing medium
- We are moving to a flood bed irrigation system – watering the plants from underneath.
- We are working towards using rainwater and ground water/ field drainage usage
Area of Provenance
We are located within seed zone 109 (see map here) . This ‘area of provenance’ – the locality of the parent trees – is our bio-geographic habitat region. This differs to our local authority boundaries.
We take in parts of Dumfries and Galloway and the Western Scottish Borders, Northumbria and the North Cumbria coast.
Our locally sourced trees are well adapted to growing in this region.
Beechgrove Trees and Hedging’s purpose is to collect, sow and grow strong stock of local provenance trees within this bio-geographical habitat region.
